House of Un-American Activities Committee
During the time of the Cold War, the House of Un-American Activites Comittee (HUAC) was established to prevent any type of communist activities. HUAC became first well known in 1947 because they started to investigate the Communist influence in the movie industry and Hollywood. HUAC believed that Communists were sneaking propaganda into movies and film. HUAC subpoened 43 witnesses from Hollywood in 1947. The 43 witnesses believed that communists were harming the film industry. Ten other witnesses were called to testify but refused to. They were known was the Hollywood Ten. The Hollywood 10 did not want to testify because they believe that that the hearings are unconstitutional. Since they refused to answer any questions. The Hollywood Ten were sent to prision. Besides the Hollywood 10, HUAC accused many others to be a threat to the United States and accused them of being associated with Communism.
